Desserts will consist of Amazon sweets and ice cream.

The delicacies and culture of the tropical rainforest will be explored at Porto Rubaiyat through a festival of art, culture, health, and gastronomy that will gather artists, photographers, gourmet chefs, journalists, and entrepreneurs.

GRILLED FISH UPON SELECTION

Tânia Nascimento, chef of the restaurant Lá em Casa (Belém do Pará) and Nonato, master palm chef, along with chef owner Carlos Iglesias of Porto Rubaiyat, will present popular Amazon dishes, consisting of a great variety of fish, fruit, and condiments of the region.

A new grill has been custom-made for the preparation of these exotic fish. Clients will have the opportunity to choose amongst Pintados, Pirarucus, Tambaquis, Filhotes, Pacus, and Amazon River Shrimp, which will be prepared right before them. The buffet will have a fixed price of R$59/per adult and R$25/per child, including couvert, a great variety of antipastos, hot and cold appetizers, salads, and desserts.

CRAFTWORK AND BIOJEWELRY

Initiatives to help the Amazon people, such as creating a market to sell their artisan jewelry, generate employment and income for them, while being in alliance with the preservation of the forest. The craftwork displayed mostly originates from Vale do Jarí, the region between the states of Pará and of Amapá. Such developmental projects are planned for the Amazon people and are sponsored by the Orsa Group through the Orsa Foundation.

An association of women artists known as Amarte produces necklaces, earrings, rings, and bracelets made of seeds and natural materials of the region. The decorative and useful products, which will also be on display, are made of wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and are handcrafted by a group of young carpenters from the Natural Workmanship Cooperative of Rio das Castanhas. The Orsa Florestal handling of tropical forests certifies all wood that is used for this event.

RAINFOREST LIFE

Displayed in 40 panels, renowned Brazilian photojournalists will portray the beauty, as well as the problems of the Amazon, in a photo exhibition organized by famous photographer Jorge Araújo, of Folha de São Paulo. In addition to winning more than 60 national and international awards, Jorge Araújo has won the Esso Award in 1979, the Wladimir Herzog Award, and the Nikon Award in Japan. Furthermore he has covered 5 World Cups, 4 Olympic Games, and traveled more than 20 times to the Amazon jungle.

Araújo selected images from the following photojournalists: Ricardo Stuckert, Paulo Whitaker, Pisco Del Gaiso, Paulo Santos, Paulo Liebert, Antonio Gaudério, Marlene Bergamos, Jonne Roriz, Celso Junior, Juca Varela, João Wainer, André Penner e Lalo de Almeida.

SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

The concept of sustainability will also be present at this event. Some of the dishes will be prepared with the Brazilian Nutand its extract, such as the extra virgin oil.

The products originate from the “Ouro Verde Amazônia” that operate and extract its products in a completely fair and environmentally correct way. The “Muaná Alimentos” will be providing the organic Açaí Palm, which will be prepared by Chef Nonato on the grill and be served with its pulp “in natura”.

Porto Rubaiyat will join together great supporters of science, gastronomy, politics and the culture of the Amazon rainforest a few weeks before the December COP-15, a world conference on Climate Change that will take place in Copenhagen.

“The idea is to promote not only the regional culture, but also to introduce sustainable business plans, which have been contributing to the social development and the preservation of the Amazon”, says Carlos Iglesias

BRUNCH AT THE GALERIA JACQUES ARDIES

This past Sat. I went to the open house brunch at the Galeria Jacques Ardies.
It was an absolutely miserable rainy day! I almost stayed home, and so glad I did not!
Walking into the brightly lite gallery with the delightful smell of fresh baked Pao de Queijo, and being welcomed by the owner with a wonderful smile, made my visit all worthwhile!
The exhibit of the naif artists is terrific! Colorful and very Brazilian! Among my favorites, the Baianas by Ivan Morais and the colorful flora and fauna of Grauben and the scenes of Jose Frietas. The paintings are for sale and very well priced! The exhibit is on until November 7th.

2009 SELECTED GUEST ARTIST FLORIAN RAISS

whether drawing, painting or sculpting,

It is my aim to develop a personal imagery based on observation and on my imagination. what really interests me is the working process. to identify the recurrent themes in my work, that

will develop and change with time. trying to know myself is an aspiration, each piece of work a part of the mosaic which might become a mirror.

Florian Raiss
